The latest CPD research (Talent Planning Survey 2015) shows that bosses are finding difficult to hire specialist managers with the right skills and talent to compete in the market and make the most of the economic growth.
It seems like that 50% of organisations are investing in developing in house-talent and 74% are seeking to recruit specialists externally. However, figures also shows 37% of poor quality applicants, suggesting a trend of skills shortage at managerial levels.
The challenge for organisations lies, however, in building a leadership culture that involves the buying-in of all managers: supervisors, team leaders, head of departments etc… The whole managerial structure needs to understand the importance of learning to think as strategic leaders, no matter their individual role. The leadership thinking and the sharing of common values and the vision within the organisation is the stepping point for building a strong competitive advantage.
Managerial skills and competences can be easily developed, with commitment and practice, the ability of thinking in strategic terms, however, requires a shift of mindset, it needs the application of thinking.
And that’s where the challenge really lies.
